Understanding Your Pool Water Chemistry
Balanced pool water isn't just about comfort - it's about safety and protecting your equipment. Water that's too acidic (low pH) will corrode your pump, heater, and pool shell. Water that's too alkaline (high pH) causes scale buildup and reduces the effectiveness of chlorine.
In Australian conditions, pools typically need more frequent monitoring during summer due to high UV levels (which destroy unstabilised chlorine), evaporation, and heavy bather loads. During winter, weekly testing is generally sufficient for most residential pools.
The most important rule: adjust one chemical at a time, and re-test before making another adjustment. pH and alkalinity are interrelated - raising alkalinity will slightly raise pH, and vice versa.
