Why It Matters
Why You Need to Know Your Pool Volume
Your pool's volume is the single most important number for maintaining healthy water. Every chemical dosage - chlorine, pH adjusters, alkalinity, calcium hardness, and stabiliser - is calculated as a concentration per litre of water. Without knowing your volume, you're either over-dosing (wasting money and irritating swimmers) or under-dosing (risking algae and bacteria).
Pool volume also determines the right pump and filter sizing. A pump that turns your pool over every 6–8 hours is the Australian standard - but that calculation requires knowing exactly how many litres you're working with.
Most Australian residential pools hold between 30,000 and 80,000 litres. An average 8m × 4m pool with a 1.5m average depth holds approximately 48,000 litres (about 12,700 US gallons).
