Why you need to know your pool volume

Your pool volume is the foundation of every maintenance decision. Chlorine, pH adjusters, alkalinity increasers, calcium chloride, and stabiliser are all dosed as a concentration per litre. Without an accurate volume, you risk over-dosing — wasting money and irritating swimmers — or under-dosing, which can lead to algae and bacteria growth.

Volume also matters for equipment. A pump that turns the entire pool over every six to eight hours is the Australian industry guideline, but that calculation starts with knowing exactly how many litres you are working with.

Typical Australian pool sizes

Most residential pools in Australia hold between 30,000 and 80,000 litres. As a reference:

• Small pool — under 30,000 L (e.g. 6 m × 3 m × 1.5 m average depth)
• Medium pool — 30,000–60,000 L (e.g. 8 m × 4 m × 1.5 m average depth)
• Large pool — 60,000–100,000 L (e.g. 12 m × 5 m × 1.5 m average depth)
